Make Your Bed

Thursday, November 1, 2018

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. How many of you reading this make your bed every single day? I can't see you, so your answer is totally safe with me. No judgement. 💜I recently (as in, just now, 5 minutes ago on YouTube) watched Admiral William H. McRaven's commencement address given at the University of Texas Austin, 2014. It is known as the "Make Your Bed Speech". This is what he says:

Every morning make your bed.  It's a simple, mundane task. But the wisdom of that task has been proven, to him, many times over. Here's why:

  • When you make your bed, you've accomplished your first task of the day
  • It gives you a small sense of pride
  • It encourages you to do another task...and another...and another....
  • By the end of the day this small task will turn into many tasks completed
  • Making your bed reinforces the fact that little things matter
  • If you can't do the little things right, you can't do the big things right
  • After a rough day, sometimes coming home to a made bed gives you the encouragement that tomorrow will be better
Of course, it's about so much more than making your bed. It's about your habits. It's about the little things you do adding up to make a big difference. Consistency. Discipline. A sense of accomplishment and pride, now matter how small, giving you a sense of purpose. It made me think of the power of small habits. And, if nothing else, I can play the speech when my kids are teenagers and try to convince them that if they make their beds, they can change the world :)

  1. I AWLWAYS make my bed.. some days it might be the only thing I get to accomplish around the house. It makes me feel a little more put together.

    1. Me too! But I didn't always. I think accomplishing one small task, consistently, always- it provides some momentum forward. Some days thats a difference maker, right?
